NZEA Events Report 2023 released

We are excited to share with you the inaugural New Zealand Events Association Events Report for the year 2023. We thank our members for the support in helping to pull this data together. The 2023 Events Report is the culmination of data collected from various sources, reflecting the robust nature of the events industry in New Zealand.

Key Highlights

  • In 2023, New Zealand hosted an impressive 7,265 events, drawing a total of 10,713,427 attendees and contributing over $696 million to the national economy. These numbers highlight the significant impact of the events industry on economic growth.

  • Concerts and sporting events jointly accounted for 58% of all events. Sporting events emerged as the category with the highest economic impact, contributing nearly 50% of the overall contribution to the national economy. The hosting of the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ tournament significantly contributed to the success of sporting events.

  • And despite having the smallest number of events, expos generated the second-highest economic impact, surpassing $173 million. Expos also recorded the highest accommodation contributions in 2023, totalling an impressive $81 million, with Fieldays being the leading event in this category.

  • Community events remain a integral part of the events eco-system, and whilst harder to track, the importance of bringing the community together, and enriching cultural exchange is invaluable.

NZEA understand we still have a long way to go in understanding the full landscape of this diverse industry, but we hope you enjoy reading our inaugural report.
