Evolution of Event Trends: A Comparison of the 00's and Now

Over the weekend I found some old Event magazines, tickets and invitations from when I lived in London back in the 00’s. It was eye opening to see what trends were ‘cool’ back then. I remember thinking how advanced we were, however, boy have we come a long way.

I thought I would compare the event trends of the 00's (2000-2009) with the current trends, highlighting the remarkable evolution (in my mind) that has taken place in the world of events.

1.      Technology

One of the most noticeable differences between the event trends of the 00's and today is the role of technology. In the 00's, events relied heavily on traditional methods such as physical invitations, paper-based registrations, and basic AV setups (not dissing the trusty projector,). Today, technology has revolutionised the event industry, with online event registration systems, mobile event apps, interactive displays, and live streaming capabilities becoming the norm. The integration of technology has enhanced event experiences, improved engagement, and expanded reach.

2. Social media

Social media has reshaped the way we communicate and connect with others, and it has also had a profound impact on the event world. I joined Facebook in 2007, and predominantly used it to write cringe-worthy status updates. And let’s not forget MySpace. These were just starting to gain popularity, and their impact on events was relatively limited. Fast forward to today, and platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok and LinkedIn have become powerful tools for event promotion, audience engagement, and real-time interaction. Event organisers now leverage social media to create buzz, sell tickets, share updates, encourage user-generated content, and foster online communities around their events.

3.      Personalisation and Customisation

I remember at one event for 1,000 pax in 2009, for our coat-check, we printed out stickers with every single guest name, and attached them to coat hangers, so we could simply ask their name on arrival. This provided a personal service at coat-check. This was time-consuming, but very well received. However, in the 00's, event personalisation and customisation were often limited to seating arrangements, décor choices, and catering options. Today, attendees expect personalised experiences from start to finish. Event organisers leverage data analytics, AI-powered recommendation systems, and attendee feedback to deliver tailored content, targeted marketing messages, personalised agendas, and unique networking opportunities. This focus on personalisation has made events more immersive, memorable, and impactful for attendees.

4.      Sustainability and Green Initiatives
The environmental impact of events has gained significant attention in recent years. While sustainability was not a prominent concern in the 00's, today's event trends emphasise eco-friendly practices and green initiatives. Organisers are striving to reduce waste, minimize carbon footprints, and incorporate sustainable elements into event design and operations. From paperless ticketing and recycling programs, to sourcing local and organic products, events today aim to leave a positive environmental legacy. Say goodbye to the swag bag.

5.      Hybrid and Virtual Events

The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for the rise of virtual and hybrid events. In the 00's, the concept of attending an event virtually was virtually non-existent. However, today, technology allows for seamless virtual participation, connecting attendees from around the world without the need for physical travel. Hybrid events, which combine in-person and virtual components, have become a popular choice, offering flexibility, extended reach, and enhanced accessibility.

The event industry has evolved significantly since the 00's, with technology, social media, personalisation, sustainability, and virtual experiences driving the current trends. Events today are more immersive, interactive, and inclusive than ever before. As we continue to embrace technological advancements and societal changes, it will be fascinating to see how event trends evolve in the coming years. One thing is certain: events will always adapt to meet the ever-changing needs and desires of attendees, ensuring that they remain an integral part of our lives.
